That being written, I believe Slap Shot is many people's default favorite hockey movie simply because it came along first, and it's difficult to unseat a champion. However, I thought Goon's Doug Glatt was presented as a bit too dumb, and there is no match for the Hanson Brothers characters from Slap Shot (I didn't "care" about the one-dimensional Hanson Brothers, I just liked watching their antics). There were many layers and things going on (that we didn't feel were compelling), and I didn't really "care" about any of the players, though I liked Paul Newman (coach). I didn't get the same feeling with Slap Shot. Our reasons included the more direct theme or storyline and a main character we cared about. After seeing Goon, I watched Slap Shot again with my wife and we came away thinking Goon was better. As a 1970s-era hockey player I continue to love Slap Shot.
